Celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The Arc of Jackson County and other related organizations celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March, and invite you to get acquainted with someone who has a developmental disability. You’ll learn that everyone has something to offer and that people with disabilities are just like you!

Statewide, and across the nation, organizations devoted to serving individuals with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities (MR/DD) are planning special events in March to raise public awareness of the many abilities people have, regardless of disability, encouraging people to bring diversity to their communities by welcoming people with disabilities into local neighborhoods, workplaces, houses of worship and schools.

Medford’s Grocery Outlet and Ashland Shop N’ Kart will be participating in bringing public awareness to our community by placing stories about people with developmental disabilities in their stores. The community will have an opportunity to give monetarily if they so choose at these locations as well.

Much has changed throughout the years for people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. Medical and technological breakthroughs have drastically improved many aspects of their lives. Unfortunately, this important part of our society is still vastly overlooked. Many people fail to realize that people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities can hold a job, can be a great neighbor and can give back to their communities.
